About Tynemouth Priory and Castle

Tynemouth Priory and Castle occupies a steep-sided headland commanding the entrance to the River Tyne, a natural stronghold with all-round sea views. The site holds many centuries of history layered on top of one another: an Iron Age fortification, a medieval Benedictine priory with its great monastic church, a medieval castle, and underground gun batteries built during both World Wars. Managed by English Heritage, it is one of the most dramatic historic sites on the North East coast.

Visitors can explore the 14th-century monastic gatehouse, described as a powerful miniature castle, and the ruins of the medieval monastic church with its mariners' tombstones. The 15th-century Percy Chantry survives with a rose window and a vaulted ceiling carved with saints, while interactive displays tell the site's story through historical characters, including a Second World War gunner. The accessible underground gun batteries reveal something of wartime living conditions on the headland.
