Bonfire Night in Tynemouth

Bonfire Night 2026 falls on Thursday 5 November, but very little around the coast actually happens on the night itself. Tynemouth's own display lands on Saturday 7 November, and the free borough one is six days earlier, on Sunday 1 November. That is the useful shape of the season here: a ticketed local event and a free one a few minutes up the coast, on different weekends, so there is no need to choose between them.

Tynemouth Cricket Club, Saturday 7 November

The town's display is run by Tynemouth Cricket Club at its Preston Avenue ground. Gates open at 5pm and the fireworks go up from 7pm, with food and the clubhouse bar running through the evening. Tickets are roughly £4 to £7 depending on the type, with a group ticket at £20, and they are sold in advance through TicketSource rather than on the gate, so this is not one to decide on at teatime.

One thing worth being straight about. The ground is not by the priory. Preston Avenue sits inland, in the belt of playing fields between the two towns, and the postcode is NE30 2BG, which is technically a North Shields address. In practice this is Tynemouth's display and always has been, and it is a walk of fifteen minutes or so from Front Street. But if you set off for Tynemouth Priory and Castle expecting to see fireworks over the headland, you will be in entirely the wrong place.

Best for: Best for a proper local bonfire crowd you can walk home from.

This is worth thirty seconds of your attention before you pay. The club's TicketSource page carries a different URL code every year, and the 2025 listing is still live at its old address. It is genuinely easy to arrive there from a search result or a saved bookmark and buy a ticket for an event that has already been and gone. The free option: Whitley Bay, Sunday 1 November

North Tyneside Council's borough fireworks display takes place on The Links at Whitley Bay, NE26 1TQ, on Sunday 1 November. The site opens at 6pm, the display goes up at 7pm and runs for around fifteen minutes, and the whole thing is finished by half past seven. It is completely free, there is no ticketing and no booking, and the sea makes a considerable backdrop.

Whitley Bay is two stops up the coast from Tynemouth on the Metro, which takes about five minutes and saves you from the seafront car parks, which fill early. Be wary of any site quoting entry prices for this one. Several aggregators have attached ticket prices from other displays to it, and the borough display has been free for years. For a grown-up alternative on the same evening, 1910 at the Spanish City runs a Bonfire Night dinner at £50 a head, with arrival from 6.30pm.

Best for: Best for a free, short, early display that suits younger children.

Bonfire Night itself, Thursday 5 November

There is nothing organised in Tynemouth on the 5th. The nearest display on the night is Blue Flames at Benton, where gates open at 5.30pm and the fireworks start at 7.30pm. Tickets are £8.50 for adults, £5.50 for children and £25 for a family, and they are sold online only with no sales on the gate. It is about five minutes' walk from Benton Metro, which makes it a straightforward trip from the coast without the car.

If loud fireworks are hard work

Not everyone enjoys the bangs, and the coast has some gentler options. The Whitley Bay display is the easiest of the lot on that front: it is early, it is short at around fifteen minutes, and being free you can leave the moment anyone has had enough without feeling you have wasted a ticket. A little further up the coast, Blyth's seafront fireworks on Saturday 31 October open with a low-noise display at 6pm before the main one at 7.30pm, which is a thoughtful touch for young children and anyone with sensory difficulties.

Two practical notes. Sparklers and your own fireworks are not permitted at organised displays, so leave them at home. And dogs are almost always better left at home too, somewhere warm with the curtains drawn and the radio on, rather than brought along to stand in a field full of noise.

Warming up afterwards

Preston Avenue is a short walk from the village, and the pubs know exactly what the first Saturday in November means. The Dolphin Inn on King Edward Road is the closest of the Tynemouth pubs to the ground and a reliably unfussy spot for a pint and something hot. On Front Street, The Cumberland Arms has a real fire and welcomes both children and dogs, which makes it a sensible landing place with a cold family in tow. Both get busy on display nights, so ring ahead if you want a table rather than a corner of the bar.
