Christmas in Tynemouth 2026
A guide to Christmas in Tynemouth: the festive station market, a community Christmas day at the Priory on 6 December 2026, carols at Holy Saviour's, the Boxing Day dip at Longsands, free weekend parking and the Metro.
Tynemouth does Christmas quietly. There is no big switch-on, no ice rink and no row of chalets on Front Street. What it has instead is a covered market in a Victorian station, a ruined priory on a headland, a parish church that fills up on Christmas Eve and a beach where people still run into the North Sea on Boxing Day.
This guide covers what happens every year and what is confirmed for 2026 so far.
The lights
North Tyneside Council puts festive light motifs up in its town centres each winter, and Tynemouth is one of the places on its list alongside North Shields, Whitley Bay, Wallsend and Monkseaton. In Tynemouth they simply come on: there is no public switch-on event in the village.
2026: the council has not yet published when this year's motifs go up. In previous years the borough's town-centre lights have come on in the second half of November.
If you want a switch-on with a crowd, the nearest is the Christmas tree light switch-on at Spanish City in Whitley Bay on Sunday 15 November.
Christmas shopping and the market
Tynemouth Market trades every Saturday and Sunday, 9am to 3.30pm, under the glass roof of Tynemouth Station, with over 150 stalls. In December it leans towards gifts, crafts and food, and because it is covered it is the one Christmas shopping trip on this coast that does not depend on the weather. Through December 2026 it runs as the Tynemouth Station Festive Market.
Two stops along the Metro, the North Shields Christmas Market fills Northumberland Square on the weekend of 5 and 6 December 2026.
Our full guide to Christmas markets in Tynemouth covers both, plus the Front Street independents worth a stop for presents, from Gareth James Chocolatier to the gift and homeware shops.
Late-night shopping
Tynemouth's village shops have held a late-night Christmas shopping evening in late November in recent years, with selected businesses staying open into the evening with offers. It was on 21 November in 2024 and 20 November in 2025. The 2026 date has not been announced yet; the organisers usually post it on the village's Facebook pages.
A community Christmas at the Priory
Tynemouth Priory and Castle holds A Community Christmas on Sunday 6 December 2026, 11am to 4pm. English Heritage's programme includes the Monkhouse Primary School Choir, The Can't Sing and Linkskill choirs, line dancing, Blyth Samba Band and a Highland piper, with street food stalls and activities from the Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade.
Entry is free for English Heritage members and for residents of NE25 to NE30 postcodes, who need to bring proof of address. Everyone else can book in advance on the English Heritage website for a 15% discount.

Best for: a free family day out on the headland if you live locally, with the North Shields market the day before.
Carol services
Holy Saviour's Church on the Broadway is Tynemouth's parish church, and its Christmas Eve services are the busiest of the year. In 2025 the church held a Blessing of the Crib and Carols at 5.30pm on Christmas Eve, a family service with a candlelit finale that the church itself warns is very popular, so arrive early. It also runs an informal children's service with a scratch nativity, where children dress up as part of the story, and Christmas morning communion with carols.
The 2026 times have not been posted yet. Check the church's A Church Near You page from early December.
Pantomime and Santa nearby
Tynemouth has no pantomime of its own, but the Playhouse in Whitley Bay is a short Metro ride up the coast. This year it is Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, from 4 December 2026 to 3 January 2027, with Michelle Heaton in the title role.
We have not found a Santa's grotto confirmed in Tynemouth itself for 2026. The nearest confirmed options are at Spanish City in Whitley Bay, with afternoon tea with Santa and breakfast with Santa on selected December dates.
Festive walks
A December walk is the most Tynemouth thing you can do at Christmas. Start on Longsands, climb up past Tynemouth Park, walk the length of Front Street for the lights and the shop windows, and finish at the Priory gates and the pier for the view over the mouth of the Tyne. For routes, see our guides to the best walks from Tynemouth and the Tynemouth heritage walking trail.
The Boxing Day dip
Longsands has hosted a Boxing Day swim for more than 25 years, run by the North Sea Volunteer Lifeguards as their main annual fundraiser, with the Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade among those providing safety cover. In past years registration has opened on the beach mid-morning with the swim at 11am. The 2026 arrangements have not been published yet, so check the organisers' channels before you go, and never swim alone in winter.
If you want a dip earlier in the season, the Gleeds Dip and Sip for Children North East takes place on Longsands on Friday 4 December 2026, with a minimum sponsorship target per swimmer.
Christmas trees
There is no tree yard in the village, but real trees are sold a short drive away at Preston Grange, Middle Engine Lane and Seaton Delaval from late November. In January, St Oswald's Hospice collects trees from Tynemouth doorsteps for a suggested donation. Our Christmas trees in Tynemouth guide covers where to buy, tree care and every recycling option.
Parking and the Metro
In December 2025 North Tyneside Council made on-street parking on Front Street free on Saturdays and Sundays, with the two-hour daytime limit still in force, and the Priors Haven car park was listed among the council's free car parks. The council has not yet confirmed the 2026 scheme. Our Tynemouth parking guide covers the car parks in detail.
The Metro is the easier option on a market weekend: Tynemouth station is on the yellow line. In 2025 there was no Metro service on Christmas Day or New Year's Day, and Boxing Day ran a reduced timetable. Nexus normally publishes its festive timetable in late November.
We will update this guide as the remaining 2026 dates are announced.
