About Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade Watch House

The Watch House Museum stands on Tynemouth headland near the Spanish Battery and is the home of the Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade, formed in 1864 as the world's first volunteer life brigade. The brigade was founded in the aftermath of a fierce gale on 24 November 1864, when the schooner Friendship and the steamer Stanley were wrecked at the mouth of the Tyne on the Black Middens, with the loss of many lives. The distinctive timber building, with its towers and main hall, remains the brigade's operational base as an active coastal search-and-rescue team to this day.

An accredited museum with Arts Council England, the Watch House houses a remarkable collection charting the brigade's rescues from 1864 to the present. Displays include lifesaving and rocket-apparatus equipment alongside artefacts recovered from local shipwrecks, among them ships' bells and figureheads. The museum reopened to the public in March 2024 following restoration work, and its volunteers welcome visitors to explore the story of maritime rescue on the Tyne. Admission is free.
