Tynemouth.live·

Tynemouth is home to one of the most remarkable volunteer organisations in the country -- the Volunteer Life Brigade, founded in 1866 and still active today. But there are many more ways to give your time in Tynemouth and North Shields. Here is the guide.

Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade

The Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade (TVLB) is the oldest and one of only three remaining active Volunteer Life Brigades in the UK. Founded in 1866, it has no paid roles -- over 40 members serve in active roles working together to support HM Coastguard with search and rescue along the coast. The Brigade also runs the Watch House Museum on the headland, which is free to visit.

Best for: The Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade was founded in 1866 and is the oldest volunteer coastal rescue organisation in the world. They are always looking for new members.

To volunteer, visit tvlb.org/volunteer. No prior experience is needed -- full training is provided.

Parkrun

Tynemouth parkrun (at King Edward's Bay/Longsands) is a free weekly 5k event that relies entirely on volunteers. Roles include course set-up, marshalling, barcode scanning, and tail walking. No experience needed. Check the parkrun website for details on volunteering.

Getting Started

The North Tyneside Volunteer Centre helps whether you are considering volunteering for the first time or looking for a new role. They offer advice, resources, and a database of current opportunities across the borough.
