Tynemouth.live·

Learning to swim is one of the most important life skills any child can develop, and living on the North Tyneside coast makes it more relevant than ever. With open water on your doorstep at Longsands, King Edward's Bay, and Cullercoats, water confidence is not just a nice-to-have -- it is essential.

Fortunately, families in Tynemouth and North Tyneside have a wide choice of swimming lessons, from council-run programmes following the Swim England framework to independent swim schools specialising in babies and toddlers. This guide covers the main providers, what they offer, and how to find the right fit for your child.

Tynemouth Pool -- Council Swimming Lessons

Tynemouth Pool on Preston Road North is the closest public swimming pool to Tynemouth village. Run by North Tyneside Council, it has a 25-metre main pool, a shallow learner pool, and a diving board.

The council offers children's swimming lessons following the Swim England Learn to Swim Programme. Children must be at least five years old to register for the standard lesson programme. Once registered, the pool emails families when a space becomes available -- typically three times a year at the end of each school term, with places allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.

For under-fives, Tynemouth Pool runs parent-and-baby sessions including Baby Buoys (designed to build water confidence in young babies) and Baby Time (a dedicated session in the small pool for parents and carers to enjoy the water together). Contact the pool directly on 0191 643 2900 for current session times.

Intensive crash course lessons are also available during school holidays for children aged five and over, subject to availability.

Best for: Tynemouth Pool follows the Swim England Learn to Swim Programme. Register your child and wait for an email when spaces open -- usually three times per year at the end of each term.

Tynemouth Amateur Swimming Club (TASC)

Tynemouth Amateur Swimming Club is based at Tynemouth Pool and offers a full learn-to-swim programme starting from age three -- two years younger than the council's own lessons. This makes TASC a good option for families who want to get their children started early in a structured environment.

The club's programme runs from beginners through to age-group performance squads and Masters swimming for adults. Children who progress through the learn-to-swim stages can move into competitive swimming, with the club entering galas and regional competitions. TASC is affiliated to Swim England and the ASA North East Region.

For families looking for a pathway from first splash to competitive swimming, TASC provides that continuity under one roof.

Waves -- Whitley Bay

Waves on The Links in Whitley Bay is one of North Tyneside Council's five leisure centres and offers a more varied pool environment than Tynemouth Pool. The leisure pool has a wave machine, water slides, and an aquatic play area, which can make the experience less intimidating for nervous young swimmers.

Waves runs junior group swimming lessons, one-to-one lessons, and pool parties. The small pool is used for younger children and beginners, while the leisure pool provides a fun environment for building confidence. Like Tynemouth Pool, lessons follow the Swim England framework.

The centre also has a soft play area, making it a convenient destination for families with children of different ages. Contact Waves on 0191 643 2600 for lesson availability.

Independent Swim Schools

Several independent swim schools operate across North Tyneside, often specialising in babies, toddlers, and pre-school children -- an age group not always well served by council programmes.

Splash and Swim

Splash and Swim is a local swim school using warm school pools in Monkseaton, Wallsend, and Killingworth. They follow the Swim England Learn to Swim award scheme and offer classes from baby age upwards. Their Little Splashers programme is a gentle introduction for parent and baby, while Little Swimmers caters for children aged three to four who attend without their parents, with instructors in the water providing close support.

Nemo Swimming

Nemo Swimming runs classes from the purpose-built PaddlePod pools in Shiremoor and Whitley Bay. These small, warm pools (kept at a toasty temperature) are designed specifically for young children. Nemo delivers lessons for babies from birth, toddlers from 18 months, pre-schoolers aged three to four, and juniors aged five and above. A free trial class is available for new families. Monthly subscriptions start at around 49 pounds.

Other Baby and Toddler Providers

Water Babies operates across the Tyne and Wear region, offering structured baby swimming from birth. Their teachers hold the Swim England Level 3 Teaching Pre-School Swimming (Advanced) qualification. Classes take place at various warm-water venues across the area.

Puddle Ducks runs swimming classes for babies and children from birth to ten years at pools across North Tyneside, Northumberland, and Newcastle. Their programme is progressive, moving through stages from Floaties (newborns) to Swim Academy (school-age).

Bonnie Wee Bathers offers small-group baby and toddler sessions (ages ten weeks to four years) in the warm hydrotherapy pool at Woodlawn School in Monkseaton. Sessions are led by a qualified STA Baby and Preschool instructor.

Best for: For babies and toddlers under five, independent swim schools such as Splash and Swim, Nemo Swimming, and Bonnie Wee Bathers often have shorter waiting lists than council pools.

Competitive Pathway

Children who master the basics may want to progress into competitive swimming. Two clubs serve the area:

Tynemouth Amateur Swimming Club (TASC), as described above, provides a direct pathway from learn-to-swim through to regional competition squads at Tynemouth Pool.

North Tyneside Swimming Club is a competitive club that coaches swimmers of all ages in a safe, friendly environment. The club enters the N&D Junior League for swimmers aged nine to twelve, as well as regional and open meets. It is a good option for children who have completed their learn-to-swim stages and want to take the next step.

The Coastal Angle -- Sea Swimming and Water Safety

Tynemouth's coastline is one of its greatest assets, but open water demands respect. Once your child is a confident pool swimmer, introducing them to the sea in a safe, supervised way is a natural next step.

Our guide to sea swimming in Tynemouth covers where to swim, water temperatures, wetsuit advice, and local groups. Longsands and Cullercoats Bay are the most popular beaches for family sea swimming, with RNLI lifeguards on duty during summer months.

There is no substitute for formal water safety education. Many of the providers listed above teach water safety as part of their programmes, but supplementing pool lessons with supervised beach visits helps children understand currents, tides, and cold water in a real-world context.

Best for: Pool confidence is just the start. Introduce children to the sea gradually, always swim between the red and yellow flags when lifeguards are on duty, and never swim alone.

How to Choose

The right swimming lessons depend on your child's age, confidence, and what you are looking for:

  • Babies and toddlers (birth to four): Nemo Swimming, Splash and Swim, Water Babies, Puddle Ducks, or Bonnie Wee Bathers all specialise in this age group. Warm, small pools and experienced instructors make a real difference for the youngest swimmers.
  • School-age beginners (five and over): Tynemouth Pool and Waves offer council-run Swim England lessons at affordable rates, though waiting lists can be long. TASC accepts children from age three.
  • Competitive swimmers: TASC and North Tyneside Swimming Club both provide structured coaching and competition opportunities.
  • Holiday crash courses: North Tyneside Council runs intensive courses during school holidays at Tynemouth Pool and other leisure centres -- useful for a quick boost or catch-up.

Whichever route you choose, the most important thing is to start early and stay consistent. Regular lessons build muscle memory and water confidence that will serve your child well -- whether they end up racing in galas or simply enjoying a safe swim at Longsands on a summer's day.
