Best Places to Work Remotely in Tynemouth
Where to take a laptop in Tynemouth, from early-opening speciality coffee shops on Front Street to the Grand Hotel's sea-view Drawing Room, plus what to know now the village library has closed.
Working from home on the coast has obvious perks, but there are days when the spare room gets too quiet and a change of scene is the only cure. Tynemouth is small, so you won't find a big coworking floor or a chain coffee shop with rows of plug sockets. What it does have is a cluster of good independent cafes on Front Street, a grand seafront hotel lounge that is open to the public, and a couple of spots by the sea where an hour with a laptop feels more like a treat than a chore.
A word of etiquette first. Most of these places are small and get busy at weekends and in summer, so the best working windows are weekday mornings. Buy something every hour or so, keep calls outside, and give up a table if a queue builds at lunchtime.
Laneway & Co
Laneway & Co at 69a Front Street opened in June 2025 and is the most practical all-rounder for a working morning. It serves speciality coffee and a from-scratch brunch menu, switching to toasted sourdough sandwiches and soups later in the day, and it has more indoor seating than most of its Front Street neighbours.
The hours suit an office-style day: 7am to 3pm Monday to Friday, 7am to 4pm on Saturday and 8am to 4pm on Sunday. Arrive early and you can get a couple of hours in before the brunch crowd arrives.
Best for: Best for: an early start with proper coffee and lunch without moving seats.
Cullercoats Coffee Co.
Cullercoats Coffee Co. at 69 Front Street is the village outpost of the local roastery, and the focus here is squarely on the coffee rather than a long food menu. It opens at 7am every day, closing at 2pm on weekdays and 4pm at weekends, which makes it a natural first stop for early risers who want a strong flat white before the inbox.
It is compact, so treat it as a place for a focused hour or two rather than a full day.
Best for: Best for: a quick, high-quality coffee session first thing.
Regular Jo's Coffee
Just off the main drag, Regular Jo's Coffee on the ground floor of 6B Percy Park Road is an independent speciality coffee shop serving Baristocracy coffee. Being a short walk from Front Street means it tends to be calmer than the cafes in the middle of the village, which is exactly what you want when you need to concentrate.
Best for: Best for: a quieter coffee away from the Front Street bustle.
Mister Woods
Mister Woods at 42 Front Street is a long-standing independent coffee house on the corner where Front Street meets the seafront, with its own-blend coffee and a cabinet of sandwiches and cakes. It is a Tynemouth fixture and a friendly place to sit, though its popularity with visitors means weekday mornings are a better bet than sunny afternoons.
Best for: Best for: a reliable village coffee house within a minute of the Priory.
The Grand Hotel's Drawing Room
For something more spacious, The Grand Hotel at 14 Grand Parade has the Drawing Room, which the hotel describes as a comfortable lounge with views of the coast, open to residents and the public and serving hot and cold drinks and light bites daily. Hotel lounges are often the most forgiving places to sit for a while, and the armchairs and the view over Longsands beat any office.
The hotel advertises free Wi-Fi for guests, but it is worth asking at the bar whether non-residents can use it before you rely on it. If the day runs long, Copperfields, the hotel's real-ale pub, is open to the public seven days a week.
Best for: Best for: a comfortable lounge, sea views and room to spread out.
By the sea: Crusoe's and The Greenhouse
Two venues are better for a short session with a view than for a full working day.
Crusoe's sits right on Longsands, with indoor seating and a heated outdoor terrace. The coffee shop is open 9am to 5pm on weekdays and from 8.30am at weekends, with food last orders at 4.30pm. It is a fine place to answer emails on a quiet weekday, but on a sunny weekend it belongs to walkers, surfers and dogs.
The Greenhouse at Tynemouth Park is a licensed cafe and bar overlooking the Victorian boating lake, serving food by day. Hours vary with the season and the park asks visitors to call ahead (0191 258 7593) to confirm opening times, so check before you pack the laptop.
Best for: Best for: an hour of light work with a sea or lake view.
What about the library?
Remote workers elsewhere often lean on the local library, but Tynemouth is a gap for now. The old Tynemouth Library on Front Street closed in February 2020 and is due to be demolished and rebuilt as a library and community space with longer opening hours; you can follow progress in our library redevelopment update.
Until it reopens, the nearest council option is the North Shields Community Hub and Library, which offers free PCs and other council services. It is covered by our North Shields sister site.
Tips for working in Tynemouth
- Go early, go midweek. Front Street is at its quietest before 10am on weekdays; summer weekends are best avoided.
- Bring a charged battery. None of the cafes above advertise power sockets for customers, so don't count on plugging in.
- Use the Metro. Tynemouth station on Station Terrace is a couple of minutes' walk from Front Street, which makes the village an easy working-day trip from Newcastle or Whitley Bay.
