Best Italian Restaurants in Tynemouth
Davanti Classico at the Station, Crust Social's Neapolitan pizzas, and more — Italian dining on the coast.
Tynemouth is better known for its seafood and pub dining than for Italian food, but the village does have genuine Italian options worth seeking out. The standout is a traditional ristorante set inside one of the most beautiful railway stations in the country, while a pandemic-era pop-up has grown into one of the coast's best independent pizzerias.
Davanti Classico
Davanti Classico sits within the Grade II listed Tynemouth Station, and the setting alone would justify a visit. The Victorian station's iron-and-glass canopy creates a dramatic backdrop for what is a genuinely traditional Italian ristorante. The menu covers homemade pasta, wood-fired pizzas, risottos, and seafood dishes, all made with quality seasonal ingredients. The wine list is carefully curated and predominantly Italian.
The Rapido lunch menu, available Monday to Friday from midday to 6pm, offers two courses for under fifteen pounds — exceptional value given the quality and setting. Open seven days a week from midday, Davanti Classico works equally well for a leisurely weekend lunch or a weeknight dinner. The terrace seating, when the weather allows, is one of the best spots on the coast.
Best for: Grade II listed station setting, traditional Italian, excellent value Rapido lunch menu.
Crust Social
Crust Social started life as a pop-up in 2020, operating from the Land of Green Ginger on Front Street during the pandemic. By 2024, it had earned enough of a following to open a dedicated restaurant at 14 Percy Park Road, just up the hill from the village centre. The focus is Neapolitan-style pizza — handmade dough, freshly made, with bold toppings and genuine flavour. The drinks list leans towards craft beers from local North East breweries alongside Italian beers and a short wine list.
The atmosphere is relaxed and independent in spirit. This is not a chain operation; it is a small business that grew from a lockdown idea into a proper neighbourhood pizzeria. Takeaway is available if you prefer to eat on the beach.
Best for: Neapolitan pizza, independent spirit, local craft beers, takeaway available.
Also Worth Knowing
The Salutation on Front Street serves stone-baked pizza as part of its pub menu — not a dedicated Italian, but a solid option if you want pizza in the heart of the village.
For more Italian options along the coast, Whitley Bay has several dedicated Italian restaurants including Pranzo, La Casetta, and Davanti Whitley Lodge — all within a short Metro ride or drive from Tynemouth. North Shields also has Just Italy Cafe on Saville Street, a small Italian restaurant with a strong reputation for fresh, made-from-scratch food.
