Tynemouth.live·

A sunny day at Longsands without an ice cream is a missed opportunity. Tynemouth and North Shields have a strong lineup of gelato and ice cream options, from a purpose-built parlour opposite the beach to award-winning Italian gelato just up the road. Here are the best places for ice cream in and around Tynemouth.

Cones Ice Cream Parlour

Cones is Tynemouth's newest dedicated ice cream parlour, sitting opposite Longsands Beach as part of The Tynemouth Castle Inn on Grand Parade. Every scoop is crafted on site using quality ingredients, with more than 20 flavours available at any time.

The range runs from crowd-pleasers like vanilla and chocolate to more playful options like Unicorn, Cheeky Monkey, and Nutella. There are sundaes and milkshakes for those who want more than a cone. The location is hard to beat -- step out of the door and you're looking at Longsands.

Opening hours are generous through the warmer months: Monday to Friday from noon, weekends from 11am.

Best for: Over 20 flavours made on site, right opposite Longsands Beach -- the obvious post-surf or post-swim treat.

Di Meo's

Di Meo's on Percy Park Road in North Shields is part of the Di Meo family's Italian gelato operation, making ice cream to a recipe dating back to 1925. The North Shields parlour is a short walk from the Fish Quay and an easy drive from Tynemouth village.

The flavour range includes classic Italian gelato -- pistachio, stracciatella, salted caramel -- alongside more inventive options like Battenberg and honeycomb. There's a good vegan and dairy-free selection. Di Meo's also has parlours in Whitley Bay and at the Ouseburn in Newcastle.

If you want proper Italian-heritage gelato with a wider range than a seaside kiosk, Di Meo's is the place.

Best for: Award-winning Italian gelato made to a 1925 family recipe -- the premium option near Tynemouth.

Scorchio

Scorchio is a laid-back gelato shop at Palace Buildings on the Grand Parade, serving Blyth's famous Ciccarelli artisan gelato at Tynemouth Longsands. Open Friday to Sunday, it's the weekend treat spot for surfers, dog walkers, and families doing the coastal circuit.

Ciccarelli has been making gelato since 1966 and was crowned Best Soft Serve at national awards. The flavours change regularly, and the quality is consistently excellent -- proper artisan gelato in a seaside setting.

Scorchio is a weekend-only operation, so plan accordingly. If you're after ice cream on a Tuesday, head to Cones next door instead.

Best for: Ciccarelli artisan gelato at Longsands -- open Friday to Sunday for weekend seaside treats.
