Best Chinese & Thai Restaurants in Tynemouth

Hidden Tiger, Joy of the Orient, and where to find Thai food on the coast -- Chinese and Asian dining in Tynemouth.

Tynemouth.live·

Tynemouth's restaurant scene has grown dramatically in recent years, and the Chinese and Asian offering has improved with it. A contemporary Cantonese restaurant now sits on Front Street, while a long-established pan-Asian kitchen on Tynemouth Road serves the wider North Shields area. Here is the guide.

Hidden Tiger

Hidden Tiger at 76 Front Street is a contemporary Cantonese restaurant in the heart of Tynemouth village. The dining room is intimate and atmospheric, designed for lingering meals rather than quick bites. The menu features elevated Cantonese cooking: dim sum, sticky duck breast, kung pao chicken and prawn, pan-fried seabass, and a watermelon and duck salad that you would not find in a typical Chinese restaurant. There is a cocktail list and private hire is available. Gluten-free options are clearly marked. If you want proper sit-down Chinese dining on the coast, this is the place.

Best for: Contemporary Cantonese, dim sum, cocktails, intimate setting.

Joy of the Orient

Joy of the Orient at 92 Tynemouth Road in North Shields is a restaurant and takeaway serving Chinese, Japanese, and Malaysian cuisine. The kitchen is led by a chef with over 40 years of professional experience, and the menu is broad: from Cantonese staples to sushi and Malaysian curries. Dine-in is available, but it is also a popular choice for delivery, with free delivery within one mile on orders over ten pounds. It has built a solid local reputation over many years and is particularly well-reviewed for the quality and authenticity of its cooking.

Best for: Pan-Asian menu, 40 years experience, dine-in and delivery.

A Note on Thai

There is no dedicated Thai restaurant in Tynemouth village itself. Hidden Tiger's menu includes Thai-influenced dishes alongside its Cantonese core, and Joy of the Orient covers some Thai ground within its pan-Asian offering. For a fully dedicated Thai experience, Bangkok Palace in nearby Whitley Bay is the closest option, or head to Newcastle city centre for Mantra Thai or Zaap.
