The Exchange 1856

Restored Victorian venue on Howard Street in North Shields housing an events space, cafe and bar, including a natural wine offer.

About The Exchange 1856

The Exchange 1856 is a restored Victorian building on Howard Street in North Shields, a short walk up the hill from the Fish Quay. Once the town's exchange, it now operates as a multipurpose venue combining an auditorium and events and function spaces with a cafe and bar, and has become part of the wave of food and drink destinations drawing people back to the town centre.

As well as its role as a live events and wedding venue, the bar has been highlighted for its natural wine offer, making it a relaxed spot for a drink away from the quayside. Because the building hosts a changing programme of events, it is worth checking opening hours and what is on before visiting.
