About Tynemouth Lodge Hotel
The Tynemouth Lodge Hotel is a Georgian, Grade II listed free house on Tynemouth Road, built in 1799 and holding its licence continuously ever since. Distinguished by its attractive tiled exterior, it sits next to the former Tynemouth House of Correction, a local prison and courthouse built in 1792 that operated until 1890. The current owner, Hugh Price, a founder member of the Tyneside branch of CAMRA, reopened it as a free house specialising in traditional real ale in December 1983, and the pub retains every inch of its traditional English character.
Inside, an open fire, William Morris style wallpaper, green leather seats and brass tables set the tone of this unspoilt one-room public bar. The Lodge has featured in every edition of the CAMRA Good Beer Guide since 1983, marking forty consecutive years of entries. It is celebrated for real ale, reputedly boasting the highest sales of Draught Bass on Tyneside, served alongside ales from Hadrian Border and Black Sheep breweries plus rotating local guest beers.
