Plans to build on the long-vacant land beside Tynemouth Metro station are back before North Tyneside's planning committee, and council officers have recommended the scheme for approval ahead of the meeting on 30 August. Nothing is decided yet, but a recommendation to approve is a significant step for a site that has sat empty for years.

The proposal is for a mixed-use development of between two and six storeys on brownfield land next to the grade II-listed station, which is one of Tynemouth's best-loved buildings. As reported by Insider Media, the scheme would combine a ground-floor commercial unit with new homes, alongside public realm improvements and landscaping.

The plans include a widened pedestrian route running from Station Terrace through to Tynemouth Road, which would make getting between the station and the surrounding streets easier on foot, and new planting intended to create a wildlife corridor across the site. Turning derelict land into something with homes, a bit of commercial life and greenery is broadly the kind of use most residents have long said they would like to see here.

That said, this is a planning decision, not a done deal. Schemes on this prominent site have been debated before, and how it sits against the listed station, along with matters such as height, parking and access, is exactly what the committee exists to weigh up.
