The Dolphin Pub Reopens After £168k Refurbishment

The Dolphin on King Edward Road has reopened following a £168,877 refurbishment, with an extended bar, refreshed lounge and upgraded outdoor seating, as its Tynemouth-born licensee marks a year at the helm.

One of Tynemouth's familiar King Edward Road locals is back in business. The Dolphin has reopened after a £168,877 refurbishment, and for anyone who has walked past its closed doors these past few weeks, the changes inside are worth a look.

The work has extended the bar area and refreshed the lounge, with new fixtures, fittings, furniture, flooring and décor throughout. Outside, the pub has been given fresh paint, new lighting and signage, and an upgraded seating area for the warmer evenings the coast still has left this year. The investment was shared between the pub company Admiral Taverns and the licensee.

That licensee, Charlie Paterson, is a Tynemouth native who took over The Dolphin in August last year, so the reopening neatly marks a year at the helm. He brings a hospitality background that runs from luxury hotels to super yachts, but the pull of this particular pub is closer to home. "This is the pub where I had my first pint with my dad, so it holds a very special place in my heart," he said, as reported by Caterer & Licensee.

For regulars, the practical news is that the pub is leaning into being a proper community local again. Plans include weekly quiz nights and live sports screenings, along with fundraising for charities including the RNLI, a fitting cause for a pub a short walk from the sea.

The Dolphin sits among a good cluster of Tynemouth watering holes, and it is a fixture on the local quiz-night circuit and in our round-up of the oldest pubs in Tynemouth. You can find its details, opening hours and more on its directory listing.

Best for:

A refurbished bar, a Tynemouth-born landlord marking his first year, and quiz nights back on the calendar — The Dolphin is settling back into its role as a King Edward Road local.
