Kings Priory School Tynemouth: A Parent's Guide
A parent's guide to Kings Priory School — Tynemouth's all-through academy formed from the merger of a historic independent school and a state primary, covering ages 4 to 18 on one site.
Kings Priory School is the school that defines education in Tynemouth. An all-through academy covering ages 4 to 18, it occupies a single campus at Huntington Place and educates around 1,350 pupils from Reception through to Sixth Form. For most families in the village, it is the obvious — and often only — choice.
But Kings Priory is not an ordinary school. Its origins make it one of the most unusual academies in the North East.
A School Born from Merger
Kings Priory was formed in September 2013 from the merger of two very different institutions.
The King's School Tynemouth was an independent school with deep roots. Founded in the nineteenth century and affiliated with the Church of England, it educated generations of Tynemouth children as a fee-paying school. By the 2010s, however, it faced the financial pressures common to smaller independents — falling rolls, rising costs, and competition from well-funded state schools.
Priory Primary School was the local state primary, serving children from Reception to Year 6.
The merger, facilitated by the Woodard Academies Trust (now part of United Learning), brought the two schools together as a single all-through academy. The King's School's buildings, traditions, and ethos were combined with the state primary's community role. The result was a school that offers something rare: a continuous, non-selective education from age 4 to 18, free at the point of entry.
Best for: Kings Priory was formed in 2013 from the merger of The King's School Tynemouth (independent) and Priory Primary School (state). It is now a free, non-selective academy.
What Makes It Different
The all-through model is Kings Priory's defining feature. In most areas, children attend a primary school until age 11, then transfer to a separate secondary school. At Kings Priory, that transition does not happen. A child who starts in Reception at age 4 can stay at the same school until they finish their A-Levels at 18.
This has practical advantages for families:
- No Year 7 transition stress — children already know the building, the teachers, and their peers
- One school run for families with children of different ages
- Continuity of pastoral care — staff know children over many years
- A single community from the youngest to the oldest pupils
The school retains a Christian foundation from its King's School heritage, with regular chapel services and a faith-based ethos. However, it is non-selective in admissions — there is no entrance exam or faith requirement. Children of all backgrounds and beliefs are welcome.
Ofsted and Academic Performance
Ofsted rated Kings Priory Good in its most recent inspection in June 2024. The inspectors noted strengths in the school's curriculum, leadership, and personal development provision.
At GCSE level, Kings Priory's results are broadly in line with the national average. The Sixth Form offers A-Level and vocational courses, with most students progressing to university or higher apprenticeships.
The school's academic profile reflects its non-selective intake — it educates the full range of abilities in Tynemouth, from the most academic to those needing additional support. Parents looking for a grammar school or selective experience will not find it here; what they will find is a comprehensive school with strong pastoral care and an unusually stable community.
The Campus
Kings Priory's campus at Huntington Place, NE30 4RF is a mix of historic buildings from the King's School era and modern facilities. The site includes:
- Separate primary and secondary buildings connected on one campus
- Sports fields and an all-weather pitch
- A chapel (reflecting the school's Christian foundation)
- A sixth form centre
The school sits in the heart of Tynemouth, within walking distance of Front Street, the Metro station, and the coast. Most pupils walk or cycle; the school's central location is one of its practical advantages.
Admissions
Kings Priory sets its own admissions criteria as an academy, but applications go through North Tyneside Council's coordinated admissions process. The oversubscription criteria prioritise:
- Looked-after children
- Siblings of current pupils
- Distance from the school (straight-line)
Given Tynemouth's compact geography, most families living in the village fall within the catchment. However, the school also draws pupils from Cullercoats, North Shields, and parts of Whitley Bay.
For Reception (age 4), applications open in the autumn term for entry the following September. The national offer day is in April. For Year 7 (age 11), the secondary transfer offer day is in March — though children already in Kings Priory's primary phase transfer automatically.
Best for: Admissions go through North Tyneside Council (not Newcastle). Most Tynemouth residents are within catchment. Apply at my.northtyneside.gov.uk.
Is Kings Priory Right for Your Family?
Kings Priory suits families who value stability, community, and the convenience of a single school for their child's entire education. The all-through model eliminates the Year 7 transition and creates a school where teachers know children for years, not just a single key stage.
It is not a selective school, and it does not try to be. Families seeking a grammar school or high-pressure academic environment will need to look further afield. But for a well-rounded, non-selective education in one of the North East's most desirable villages, Kings Priory is hard to beat.
