Best Beer Gardens in Tynemouth

The Salutation, The Priory, and The Beehive — the best beer gardens on the coast.

Tynemouth.live·

Tynemouth has something most beer garden guides cannot offer: the sea. Combine that with a cluster of good pubs in a compact village centre and you have one of the best spots on the North East coast for outdoor drinking. Here is where to go.

The Salutation -- Heated Huts and Big Garden

The Salutation on Front Street has one of the best beer gardens in the area. The rear garden is sizeable, with plenty of picnic benches and sheltered huts fitted with their own heaters and televisions. It works in almost any weather, which is no small thing on the coast. Food is served outside and dogs are welcome.

Best for: Best for: all-weather garden, heated huts, food and drink outside.

The Priory -- Biggest Outdoor Area

The Priory has one of the largest outdoor seating areas in the village. The front terrace stretches along the building and around the corner, fenced off from the path. On a sunny day, the proximity to the priory ruins and coastline makes this a cracking spot.

Best for: Best for: sheer space, castle and priory views, prime Front Street location.

The Beehive -- The Secret Garden

The Beehive is a Grade II-listed pub with a secret garden that has earned a reputation as one of the best in the area. There is a bar in the garden, a children's play area, and covered seating. It is a genuine sun trap and fills up fast on warm days. Pub grub favourites and a good selection of drinks.

Best for: Best for: families (play area), hidden garden, sun trap.

The Split Chimp -- Sea View Sipping

The Split Chimp sits close to the coast and offers outdoor seating with glimpses of the sea during warmer months. The focus here is craft beer -- a rotating selection of cask and keg from independent breweries. If you want quality over quantity, this is your spot.

Best for: Best for: craft beer lovers, sea views, independent brewery selection.

Platform 2 -- Outdoor Area at the Station

Platform 2 has a fantastic outdoor seating area that catches the afternoon sun. Named for its proximity to Tynemouth Metro station, it is convenient for those arriving by public transport. The drinks list leans towards craft beer and cocktails, and the atmosphere is relaxed.

Best for: Best for: convenient location, afternoon sun, craft drinks.

The Turks Head -- Front Street Classic

The Turks Head on Front Street has outdoor seating at the front, putting you in the thick of the village atmosphere. It is a traditional pub with cask ales and pub food, and the pavement tables are ideal for watching the world go by over a Sunday pint.

Best for: Best for: traditional pub, Front Street people-watching, cask ale.
