Tynemouth and the surrounding North Tyneside area have a good range of baby and toddler groups, from church hall drop-ins to structured music and swimming classes. Most run during term time. Here is what is available.

Church Hall and Community Groups

Holy Saviour's Parent and Toddler Group at Holy Saviour's Church on The Broadway, Tynemouth, runs a weekly drop-in during term time. Free play, craft activities, and refreshments. Contact Holy Saviour's Church on 0191 257 6250 for the current timetable.

Linskill Baby and Toddler Group at the Linskill Centre on Linskill Terrace, North Shields. Table-top activities including arts, crafts, and playdough, plus an inflatable play unit for physical play. Contact 0191 257 8000 or email info@linskill.org.

Riverside Family Hub in North Tyneside offers free sessions including Creative Stay, Play, and Learn (0-5 years) on Tuesdays, Brilliant Babies (0-3 years), and a Healthy Child Clinic. All sessions are free. Visit Living Well North Tyneside for the current programme.

Best for: Riverside Family Hub also runs free SEND drop-in sessions, young parents groups, and breastfeeding support. All sessions are free and no booking is needed.

Music and Sensory Classes

Hartbeeps runs in Monkseaton and Tynemouth with Baby Bells (newborn-8 months), Baby Beeps (8-18 months), and Happy House (18 months-4 years). Award-winning multi-sensory classes with music, lights, and puppets. Book online.

Little Learners offers messy play mark-making classes across North Tyneside. Designed to encourage early writing skills through paint, foam, sand, and glitter. Sessions for babies and toddlers. Book via the website.

Bloom Baby Classes runs baby development sessions across North Tyneside, including Caterpillar Club (0-6 months) and Busy Bees (6-15 months). Sensory play, baby massage, and tummy time activities. Small groups of around 15.

Baby Swimming

Tynemouth Pool on Preston Road North offers baby and toddler swimming through the council's swim programme. Sessions include Baby Buoys, Baby Time, and Ducklings during term time. Contact 0191 643 2900 to book.

The Parks Sports Centre in North Shields has a pool with baby swimming sessions and a soft play area with a dedicated sensory room. Contact 0191 643 2700.

Puddle Ducks offers Floaties (0-9 months) and Splashers (6-15 months) at pools across North Tyneside. Qualified teachers, small classes, monthly subscription.

Water Babies runs parent-and-baby swimming in heated pools across the region. Classes from birth, maximum 10 babies per session.

Library Sessions

Tynemouth Library and North Shields Library both run free Bookstart Rhyme Time sessions for babies and toddlers. Thirty-minute drop-in sessions with songs, rhymes, and stories. No booking needed. Contact the libraries directly for current days and times, as schedules change each term.

Tips

Term time only. Most groups stop during school holidays. North Tyneside follows its own term dates, which differ from Newcastle and Northumberland.

Arrive early. Hartbeeps and Bloom both fill up quickly. Library Rhyme Time is first come, first served.

Bring a change of clothes. Messy play and baby swimming both call for a spare outfit.
