Tynemouth Station Market: The Complete Guide

Everything you need to know about visiting Tynemouth Station Market — over 150 stalls every weekend inside a beautiful Victorian station, with food, vintage, crafts, and more.

Tynemouth.live·

Every Saturday and Sunday, the magnificent Victorian train station on Tynemouth's Front Street transforms into one of the North East's most popular weekend markets. With over 150 stalls selling everything from artisan food to vintage clothing, antiques to handmade jewellery, Tynemouth Station Market draws visitors from across the region.

Entry is free. The glazed roof means it runs rain or shine. And it's directly on the Metro line — you can't really ask for more.

When Is It Open?

The market operates every Saturday and Sunday, year-round:

  • Saturday: 9am-3:30pm
  • Sunday: 9am-3:30pm

Some stalls begin packing up around 3pm, so arriving before noon gives you the best selection. The market runs every weekend except Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

The Setting

Tynemouth Station is a Grade II listed Victorian railway station built in 1882. Its soaring glazed canopy stretches over the platforms, creating a naturally lit, sheltered space that works beautifully as a market hall. The ironwork and glass roof is architecturally impressive in its own right — it was restored in the early 2000s and is one of the finest Victorian station canopies still standing.

The market has operated here since 1996 and has grown steadily from a handful of stalls to today's 150+ traders.

Best for: The station's glazed Victorian canopy is a destination in itself — one of the best-preserved examples in the country.

What You Will Find

The stalls cover an enormous range, but broadly fall into these categories:

Food and Drink

A strong selection of food stalls lines the platform edges. Expect freshly baked bread, cakes, cheese, charcuterie, olives, local honey, and hot food stands serving everything from crepes and hog roast to Thai street food and wood-fired pizza. Several coffee vendors operate too — the queue for a flat white is part of the ritual.

Vintage and Retro

Tynemouth Market is particularly well-known for its vintage clothing, furniture, and homeware stalls. Mid-century furniture, retro kitchenware, vinyl records, vintage jewellery, and second-hand books all feature heavily.

Arts, Crafts, and Handmade

Local artists and makers sell prints, photography, ceramics, candles, textiles, and handmade jewellery. If you're looking for a gift that isn't from a chain shop, this is where to come.

Antiques and Collectables

Several dedicated antiques dealers trade here regularly, with stock ranging from silverware and militaria to vintage toys and local ephemera.

Plants and Flowers

Fresh flowers, houseplants, and seasonal bedding plants are available from multiple stalls.

Practical Information

Getting There

The market is located inside Tynemouth Metro station — you literally step off the train and into the market. This is comfortably the easiest way to visit, especially on busy summer weekends when parking is scarce.

From Newcastle city centre, take the Metro towards the coast and alight at Tynemouth (approximately 25 minutes).

Parking

If you drive, be aware that parking in Tynemouth is limited at weekends. Options include:

  • Paid parking on the west side of the station
  • Sea View car park (Oxford Street) — pay-and-display, small
  • Street parking in surrounding residential streets (check restrictions carefully)

On sunny weekends, parking fills early. Arrive before 9:30am or take the Metro.

Accessibility

The market is on a single level (the station platforms) and is wheelchair accessible. The surface is level tarmac throughout.

Dogs

Well-behaved dogs on leads are welcome. The market gets busy, so smaller or nervous dogs may find it overwhelming at peak times (11am-1pm on sunny days).

Tips for a Good Visit

  • Go early — the best vintage finds disappear quickly, and it's less crowded before 10:30am
  • Bring cash — many stalls accept card payments, but some smaller traders are cash-only
  • Take the Metro — parking is limited and the station is literally the venue
  • Allow 1-2 hours — you can browse quickly in 45 minutes, but most people linger
  • Combine with brunch — Front Street's cafes are a 30-second walk from the station entrance

Best for: Over 150 stalls, free entry, every weekend, sheltered from the weather — one of the best markets in the North East.
