Spotlight: Melissa Black Method

Ballet-inspired barre, yoga, and dance fitness in a converted church on Tynemouth's Land of Green Ginger — strength training that feels like art.

Tynemouth.live·

Tucked inside a converted church on Tynemouth's historic Land of Green Ginger, Melissa Black Method offers a boutique approach to fitness that blends ballet technique with strength training, barre work, and yoga.

The Method

Founded by professional dancer and choreographer Melissa Black, the method centres on low-impact, ballet-inspired exercises designed to sculpt and strengthen without the jarring effects of high-intensity workouts. Classes draw on Melissa's background as a Progressing Ballet Technique coach and qualified yoga teacher, combining precise movement with mindful breathing. The result is a workout that builds lean muscle, improves posture, and develops flexibility — suitable for all fitness levels regardless of dance experience.

The Space

The studio occupies "The Space" within The Land of Green Ginger, a characterful venue that lends an atmosphere you will not find in a conventional gym. Weekly classes include barre, yoga, morning flow, DanceFit, and contemporary movement sessions. Melissa also takes classes outdoors on the seafront at Tynemouth and Whitley Bay when the weather allows, making the most of the coastal setting.

Beyond the Studio

Melissa is also the founder of the Strong Woman Project and Women that Ride, reflecting a broader commitment to women's health and community. Alongside her regular timetable, she runs retreats and workshops that combine movement, nutrition, and wellbeing.

Whether you are a former dancer returning to movement or someone looking for an alternative to the gym, the Melissa Black Method offers something genuinely different on Tynemouth's doorstep.
