Spotlight: Kumon North Shields
Daily practice meets weekly study centre sessions — how Kumon's self-learning method helps North Tyneside children build confidence in maths and English.
If your child needs a confidence boost in maths or English — or is ready to push ahead of their school year — Kumon North Shields at the Linskill Centre offers a structured programme that thousands of families across the UK rely on.
How It Works
Kumon is not conventional tutoring. Rather than working through a child's homework or cramming for a test, the method builds fluency through daily worksheet practice at home, supported by visits to the study centre up to twice a week. Each session at the Linskill Centre typically lasts around 30 minutes per subject, with the instructor guiding students through any sticking points and setting the next batch of work.
The Self-Learning Approach
After an initial diagnostic test, the instructor creates a personalised study plan pitched at the right starting level — sometimes below school level to ensure rock-solid foundations. Students then progress in small, incremental steps, mastering each stage before moving on. The goal is not just academic improvement but the development of self-learning habits: concentration, time management, and the confidence to tackle unfamiliar material independently.
Practical Details
The centre runs weekday sessions between 15:00 and 19:00 and Saturday mornings from 09:00 to 13:00, making it straightforward to fit around school and other activities. As an Ofsted-registered provider, the centre is eligible for childcare voucher and Tax-Free Childcare schemes, which can reduce the monthly cost. Programmes are open to children of all ages, from early readers through to secondary school students aiming for top GCSE grades.
