Spotlight: Collingwood Tennis Club
Eight artificial grass courts in Priors Park, junior and adult coaching, and a volunteer-run club spirit dating back to 1921.
Nestled in Priors Park with views across to Tynemouth Priory, Collingwood Tennis Club has been part of the local sporting scene since 1921. Over a century later, the club continues to thrive as a welcoming, volunteer-run organisation offering tennis for players of all ages and abilities.
The Courts
The club boasts eight artificial grass courts, providing a consistent playing surface that drains well and remains playable through much of the year — a significant advantage over traditional grass in the North East climate. The courts are used for coaching sessions, club matches, and general member play.
Coaching Programme
Collingwood offers coaching for both juniors and adults, run through the LTA's ClubSpark platform. Junior programmes introduce children to the sport with age-appropriate sessions, while adult coaching caters for beginners picking up a racquet for the first time through to improvers looking to sharpen their game. The club also runs cardio tennis sessions — high-energy, music-driven workouts on court — which are open to both members and non-members.
Club Life
What makes Collingwood special is its community atmosphere. The club is entirely volunteer-run, with members giving their time to organise social events, inter-club matches, and tournaments throughout the season. It is the kind of place where you can turn up for a casual knock and find a game, or commit to competitive league tennis if that is more your style.
Membership details and coaching bookings are available through the club's ClubSpark page.
