Council Services in Tynemouth

From bin collections and council tax to beach management and parking enforcement, here is your guide to the council services that keep Tynemouth running.

Tynemouth.live·

Tynemouth is part of the Metropolitan Borough of North Tyneside, and it is North Tyneside Council — not Newcastle City Council — that provides the day-to-day services residents rely on. The council's headquarters are at Quadrant in Cobalt Business Park, Silverlink, and its website at northtyneside.gov.uk is the starting point for most enquiries. Here is a guide to the main council services that affect life in Tynemouth.

Bin Collections and Recycling

North Tyneside Council operates a fortnightly bin collection service across the borough. Households receive a green bin for general waste and a blue bin for mixed recyclables including paper, cardboard, tins, cans, glass bottles, and plastic bottles. Garden waste is collected separately in a brown bin, available through a paid subscription. You can check your collection day by entering your postcode on the council's waste collection schedule page.

Bulky waste items such as furniture and white goods can be collected for a fee, and the council also runs household waste recycling centres. The nearest to Tynemouth is the site at Howdon, off the A19.

Best for: Check your bin day at northtyneside.gov.uk/waste-collection-schedule — collections are fortnightly.

Council Tax

Council tax in North Tyneside is set each year by the council and includes precepts for the Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Authority and the Police and Crime Commissioner for Northumbria. Most properties in Tynemouth village fall within Bands E to H, reflecting the area's higher property values compared with the borough average.

You can view your bill, set up direct debit payments, apply for a single person discount, or report a change of circumstances through the council tax section of the council website. If you are on a low income, you may be eligible for council tax support.

Parking Enforcement

Parking is one of the most contentious issues in Tynemouth, particularly during summer weekends when visitors flock to Longsands and the village. North Tyneside Council has been a civil parking enforcement authority since June 2007, meaning the council — rather than the police — is responsible for issuing Penalty Charge Notices (PCNs) for on-street and off-street parking contraventions.

Enforcement covers locations across Tynemouth including Grand Parade, Beaconsfield, Sea Banks, and the Spanish Battery car park. Resident parking permit zones operate in several streets surrounding the village centre and Front Street. Permits are currently provided free of charge to eligible residents.

If you receive a PCN, you can pay or challenge it through the council's PCN portal. You have 28 days to make representations.

Best for: Resident parking permits are free — apply through the North Tyneside Council website.

Beach Management and Coastal Maintenance

North Tyneside Council manages some of the best urban beaches in England. Tynemouth Longsands and King Edward's Bay have held the Blue Flag award — an international standard for beach cleanliness, safety, and environmental management — consistently since the 1990s. Both beaches also hold the Seaside Award from Keep Britain Tidy.

The council employs summer beach wardens who work alongside a year-round community and public spaces protection team to keep the beaches clean and safe. Lifeguard provision is arranged during the summer season at Longsands. The council also maintains coastal infrastructure including the seawall at King Edward's Bay, which has been reinforced in recent years with Environment Agency funding to protect Sea Banks and the promenade from storm damage.

Water quality at Longsands North, Longsands South, and King Edward's Bay has consistently been rated "Excellent" by the Environment Agency.

Planning Applications

If you want to build an extension, convert a loft, or make other changes to a property in Tynemouth, you will need to apply for planning permission through North Tyneside Council. Many properties in the Tynemouth Village Conservation Area are subject to additional restrictions, and some are individually listed.

You can search for and comment on planning applications through the council's online planning portal. Pre-application advice is available for a fee.

Best for: Properties in the Tynemouth Village Conservation Area may need additional consent for external changes.

Leisure Facilities

North Tyneside Council runs a network of leisure centres under its sport and leisure service. The facility closest to Tynemouth is Tynemouth Pool, which has a swimming pool, Contours gym, studio, and spa area. Waves at Whitley Bay, a short Metro ride away, offers a larger pool, gym, and spa.

Across the borough, the council operates four indoor swimming pools, five gyms, three sports halls, multiple studios, and outdoor facilities including pitches, courts, and an athletics track. A monthly Contours membership gives access to all sites.

Reporting Problems

North Tyneside Council has an online reporting system for a wide range of issues. You can report potholes, damaged pavements, faulty street lights, fly-tipping, graffiti, dog fouling, and anti-social behaviour through the council website. A pothole 40mm or greater in depth in a road is treated as a safety hazard requiring repair.

For urgent issues outside office hours, the council operates an emergency out-of-hours line. The general contact number is 0345 2000 101.
