Best Playgrounds in Tynemouth

Tynemouth Park, Northumberland Park, and the beach — best play areas in Tynemouth.

Tynemouth.live·

Tynemouth and neighbouring North Shields have several outdoor playgrounds that cater for different ages and different kinds of day out. Whether you want a quick swing after a walk along the coast or a full afternoon with crazy golf and ice cream, here is a guide to the best options.

Tynemouth Park

Tynemouth Park sits between Tynemouth village and North Shields and is the area's main family park. The children's play area is located to the west of the Victorian boating lake and has equipment suitable for a range of ages.

Beyond the playground, the park offers plenty of extras to extend a visit. There is an 18-hole dinosaur-themed crazy golf course, a pirate maze, and seasonal inflatable play. The boating lake has pedal boats available in warmer months, and the Clock Tower Cafe serves drinks, snacks, and ice cream. Public toilets are at the entrance.

Best for: The main family park in Tynemouth -- playground, boating lake, crazy golf, pirate maze, and a cafe. Something for every age group.

Northumberland Park

Northumberland Park is a Green Flag Award-winning park nestled between Tynemouth and North Shields. It has a children's playground, a BMX track, a visitor centre, well-maintained flower beds, and several trails through the grounds.

The park is quieter than Tynemouth Park and has more of a nature reserve feel, with open spaces for running around and areas for exploration. It is a good alternative if you want something less busy, particularly on summer weekends when Tynemouth Park can get crowded.

Best for: A quieter, Green Flag park with a playground, BMX track, and nature trails. Less busy than Tynemouth Park.

The Beach and Seafront

While not a traditional playground, the beaches at Tynemouth are among the best natural play spaces in the North East. Longsands Beach has firm sand at low tide, rock pools at the northern end, and is ideal for building, digging, and general running about. King Edward's Bay is smaller and more sheltered, with rock pools that keep children occupied for hours.

The seafront area also has a seasonal water play feature near the promenade on busy summer days. Combined with fish and chips from one of the seafront shops, it makes for a proper day out.

Best for: Longsands and King Edward's Bay offer natural play -- rock pools, firm sand, and space to run. Free and always open.

Play Streets

North Tyneside has one of the most active Play Streets programmes in the country, with over 37 streets across the borough -- including several in Tynemouth, Cullercoats, and North Shields -- that regularly close to traffic so children can play outdoors safely. Check the Play.Meet.Street North Tyneside website for details of streets near you and how to get involved.
